Bellingham to Deception Pass Tour

Come and let us show you the unbridled beauty of a scenic drive south along Puget Sound.

We will pick you up in Bellingham, then hop on Highway 11, better known as Chuckanut Drive. Here we hug beautiful Bellingham Bay as we make our way south. The forested islands of the San Juans’ rise up from the shimmering waters of Samish Bay. On the other side are the cliffs of Chuckanut Mountain, and along the way we may catch a small waterfall or two! This is a scenic 20-mile drive that kicks off our day of touring. The Vista pullout is a great place to stop and view some of the islands across the bay, and on a clear day, the snow-capped Olympic Mountains beyond.

The tiny towns of Edison and Bow are our next stops, where we can grab a snack and/or milkshake. With a population of less than 150 people, you will be charmed by the friendliness of

Edison, as you take in this rural village. Just to the east is Bow, an unincorporated town marked by several great places to eat and drink. The oyster industry is well-known here, and the seafood restaurants offer fresh-caught oysters from Puget Sound.

Skagit Valley’s claim to fame is the annual tulip festival. Here you can pick up tulip bulbs all year round, and people from all over the world come here for the Spring Tulip Festival. Washington state actually produces so many tulip bulbs, some of them get exported to Holland, the other global tulip capital! Scattered around Skagit Valley are berry farms, quaint communities, and wildlife galore. The drive through here is a welcoming contrast to the coastal drive we will have earlier in the day, and showcases the variety of landscapes we’ll encounter.

Then we hop on Highway 20 which will take us down to Fidalgo Island and Deception Pass. Rosario Beach is right off the road and on clear days you can view Lopez Island to the west. Another nice hike is to Lighthouse Point. Don’t let the name deceive you, however, there is no actual lighthouse here. This is an easy, 1.5-mile hike with gorgeous views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. At the most southern part of the trail, look to your left and you will see our final destination, the stunning Deception Pass bridge.

Deception Pass Bridge was built in the 1930’s, stretching high over the inlet to the bay. Its dramatic height makes for a great photo opportunity. As with any engineering feat in its day, its construction was rife with danger, where a few of the bridge workers lost their lives. Just across it is Deception Pass State Park, at the northern part of Whidbey Island. This is the state’s most often-visited park, with an array of outdoor activities, and a beautiful end to our trip.
